Urie Bronfenbrenner was a Russian-born American developmental psychologist whose most significant work was his ecological systems theory of child development. Bronfenbrenner’s research and his new model of child development played a key part in altering the perspective of developmental psychology by calling attention to the many additional environmental and societal influences which impacted upon child development.

Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917-2005) developed the ecological systems theory to explain how everything in a child and the child's environment affects how a child grows and develops. He labeled different aspects or levels of the environment that influence children's development, including the microsystem, the 2009-11-10 If early childhood educators know and appropriately use just one theory that is relevant to early childhood education, Bronfenbrenner's is the theory for them. As all good teachers know, it is the typically occurring activities in which their children engage, including the interactions that they 2020-06-15 Urie Bronfenbrenner, a co-founder of the national Head Start program and widely regarded as one of the world’s leading scholars in developmental psychology, child-rearing and human ecology — the interdisciplinary domain he created — died September 25, 2005. He was 88. Developed by psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner, ecological systems theory explains how human development is influenced by different types of environmental systems. Researchers, Urie Bronfenbrenner founded the Ecological Systems Theory to understand the complex relationship between the infant, the family, and society and how they impact child development.

He is best known for ecological systems theory. This theory explains human development as the result of nested relationships between the individual and family,

Urie’s work at Cornell included: 1) developing theory and corresponding research designs at the frontiers of developmental science; 2) laying out the implications and applications of developmental theory and research for policy and practice; and 3) communicating–through articles, lectures, and discussions–the findings of developmental research to the general public and to decision-makers Formulated by famous psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner, this theory helps us understand why we may behave differently when we compare our behavior in the presence of our family and our behavior when we are in school or at work. The Five Environmental Systems Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory Urie Bronfenbrenner noticed that a child’s nature depends on the context they grew up in. Thus, he decided to study what factors had the most effect on childhood development. Bronfenbrenner considered that the environment was made up of four interrelated systems. Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory offers one approach to answer this question. He believed that a child’s developed was affected by everything that was in the environment around them. There are five different levels of the environment according to this theory.

Bronfenbrenner’s theory defines complex “layers” of environment, each having an effect on a child’s development. This theory has recently been renamed “bioecological systems theory” to emphasize that a child’s own biology is a primary environment fueling her development. Brofenbrenner’s theory looks at how each of the areas interplays in the development of humans and thus thought it important to study how all areas impact development instead of studying each area separately.
