Starting around 40 years ago in Gävle, a giant goat made of straw has been built and displayed in the middle of town starting four weeks before Christmas Eve. The goat weighs a whopping 7,200 pounds, or more than three tons (the average weight of an American car is two tons). About a mile of rope – 5,250 feet – is used to secure the straw. 12,000 knots are tied to keep the goat secure. Nearly 4,000 feet of Swedish pine is used to create the goat’s wooden skeleton.
